Finding freedom and settling in to grace

In the United States, people have a saying, “head over heels in love.” My favorite asansa (Adho Mukha Vrksasana) puts my heels over my head. I love the handstand because it brings me to my inner child--makes me laugh! It gives me the most freedom, challenge, and strength. It’s the easiest way to empty out my mind and be present. You can’t do an inversion without being fully present. In our new studio, we finally have walls! So we can enjoy more inversions. We’ve been working into handstands a lot lately, and people are loving it and surprising themselves.

There’s a saying in Venezuela that goes something like, “from flip flops to high heels.” In a way, the saying fits Yoga Body and Balance as we’ve gone from teaching in our living room to teaching in our new space. People say, “It’s beautiful, spacious, elegant, welcoming. It has everything!”  I feel like a fish finally in water swimming forward toward something greater than I am.

Like many of you, I sometimes have to remind myself that it’s important when you’re giving away so much to nurture yourself. I have to make sure, in some way, I too am getting watered. It’s easy to put aside my personal practice, and when I do, life doesn’t work out very well. The flower needs water to keep her vibrant colors and aroma.

These days I am really loving the yoga slow practice. I gives me so much peace and allows me to dive deeper into myself, to empty out this very busy little voice that wants to give me opinions all day long! I feel my body opening up like a flower in spring--letting it happen naturally, when ready, instead of trying too hard. Since this slow practice can be 15 minutes or an hour, I don’t have to stress that I don’t have time in the day to do it. With a new business and two kids, time is my great treasure these days!

We know time is your treasure as well, and we value our time spent together at Yoga Body and Balance as we tip heels over head into freedom or fall head over heels into grace.

P.S. You're welcome to leave your high heels at home--wear your flip flops!

Bringing balance with biomagnetism

     by Olga Caicedo

Biomagnetism, simply put, is a vibrational therapy that balances the pH of the body. This therapy eliminates the acidity that causes the growing and association of unfriendly microorganisms. Without those unfriendly microorganisms, the person gains more energy and health. The particular type of biomagnetic therapy I practice is based on the theory of magnetic pairs discovered by Dr. Isaac Goiz of Mexico.

By applying pairs of magnets on specific parts of the body identified by Dr. Goiz as correlating with particular dysfunctions or pathogens, the person recovers his/her pH balance. This procedure is painless and completely safe.

Biomagnetism is a scientific therapy recommended for all kinds of dysfunctions and problems and is not limited to age. It is compatible with any other therapy, except chemotherapy, and it is not recommended for individuals who wear a pacemaker.

What clients are saying about biomagnetism:

“My present physical symptoms are reduced. I had started having intense pain from hiatal hernia, and that has disappeared. I had headaches, and they are greatly reduced--almost eliminated. My thinking is clearer. I am very appreciative of this therapy. Besides the lessening of physical symptoms, the process elevated my mood.”
JB, Lincoln, NE

“The therapy has helped my body clear toxins. I smile more and laugh again. It has meant an inner peace and center strengthening. Before, I was less optimistic, bothered by old memories. Now I am happier, more hopeful, and less anxious. Now memories can surface and seem cleared of negativity."
GH, Lincoln, NE

Living with Intention -- A practitioner's experience

I began studying yoga in Lexington, KY when I was working on my master's degree in psychology. I felt stressed most of the time, and felt like I was not enjoying life as much as I could. So I decided to take up yoga and Flamenco dancing. I continued studying both through my doctoral studies and beyond. However, it was yoga that appealed to me as the best practice that addressed my spiritual, physical, and emotional needs. Before coming to Lincoln, I began enjoying Anusara and Ashtanga styles of yoga. I liked these styles because they focused on opening the heart, empowerment, and awareness.

After moving to Lincoln, I could not find teachers that taught in these styles. I was very glad to find Tataya and Thomas this past year because of their training in these forms of yoga. In their teachings, there is an emphasis on physical empowerment and growth through yoga. But what I most enjoy is their emphasis on grounding all of their teaching in spiritual principles. Thus, right now in my life and yoga practice I am working with such intentions as "being in my body and honoring its wisdom," "opening my heart to the flow of energy," and "working with my judgments." These practices draw me first and foremost to yoga practice, and I feel so glad that Thomas and Tataya focus on these.

In addition to yoga, I have worked with Thomas on issues related to nutrition as well as received outstanding bio-magnetic treatment from Olga. In fact, one of my treatments with her resulted in a health miracle doctors could not explain. I enjoy working with all of them, and am so glad that in one beautiful space there are three (plus) beautiful teachers offering a variety of life-supporting practices.

Yoga for Stiff People
Sunday, May 25
3:00-5:00 PM

Would you like to:

* enhance your level physical fitness
* protect yourself from injury to joints, muscles, and tendons
* reduce muscular soreness
* reduce muscle tension
* increase your range of motion?

Then come to our “Yoga for Stiff People” workshop!

An inflexible back and hips will lead to stiffness, poor posture, back problems, movement limitations, and a higher risk for injury to muscles, tendons, and ligaments. While it is unclear is how much of reduction in joint flexibility is caused by aging or by the reduced physical activity related to aging, we know that anyone, regardless of age, can improve flexibility. Stretching is undoubtedly the best way to increase flexibility.

Come learn how to stretch safely and productively for your good health and see how good you can feel!

Cost:
$30 if paid by Thursday, May 15
      $35 after May 16

Book of the Month
~Thomas's review

There's nothing that stirs such quiet anticipation as starting a new book. Where will it take you as you turn the pages? Perhaps the title,The Power of Now, by Eckhart Tolle sounds familiar. His new book, A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose certainly promises that anticipation. Every night I look forward to getting my head in this book and every night I find myself fully engaged. Day by day I've found myself transforming. I'm not far into the book, but it's holding me like a lover's embrace. Most of the time I don't finish the books I start, but already I'm planning to read this one again.

For ten years I've studied how to be a self-witness and how to grow and evolve your state of being. In this book, Eckhart Tolle masterfully and simply restates the structure of this and develops ways to do it. His writing is beautiful, engaging, simple and profound. You will enjoy it, take it to heart, and as the pages turn, you will witness your own transformation!

Recipe of the Month
Cleansing Raw Fruit Pie

Crust Ingredients:
½ cup ground flaxseeds
2 cups almonds, soaked overnight and drained
½ cup dried coconut
½ cup coconut oil
½ teaspoon sea salt

Combine above ingredients in a food processor bowl, pulsing mixture until you have  moist, cornmeal-like consistency. Press into a small pie plate, cover, and freeze for 6 or more hours.

Filling ingredients:
6 cups fresh sliced peaches, nectarines or apricots
2 cups fresh, local berries or cherries
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
½ cup honey, if desired
pinch of sea salt
¼ cup dried coconut

Gently combine freshly chopped stone fruit with berries or pitted cherries. Mix in vanilla, salt and add honey if additional sweetener is desired. It is not required!

Remove crust from freezer. Fill with fresh fruit, spreading evenly over pie crust. Sprinkle extra ¼ cup dried coconut over fruit. Place in freezer and allow to set until firm, though not frozen solid. Slice and serve.

This no frills, all raw pie can really hit the spot, especially while eating a cleansing diet for an extended period of time.
