Poem by Denise Levertov
Variation on a Theme by Rilke
A certain day became a
presence to me;
there it was, confronting me--a sky, air, light:
a being. And before it started to descend
from the height of noon, it leaned over
and struck my shoulder as if with
the flat of a sword, granting me
honor and a task. The day's blow
rang out, metallic--or it was I, a bell awakened,
and what I heard was my whole self
saying and singing what it knew: I can.

Quote of the Month

Let's Celebrate!
Who doesn't love to celebrate? What a beautiful word! All over the world October is a festival month. In India, it's "Diwali," or Festival of Lights," and its theme is good conquers evil. As people gather to light rows of lamps, darkness fades, and people grow closer to one another and to God. At Yoga Body and Balance we have personal reasons to celebrate, so we're officially declaring October Celebration Month! One year ago this month, Thomas and I opened Yoga Body and Balance Studio in our home on B Street. Look how far we've come! And my birthday is October 3! My intention for this year is to live in love and inspire everyone around me to live it too! This is the first principle in the eight limbs of yoga, the Yamas "Ahimsa." It sounds easy, but think about it. Can every little thing you do come from a loving space? Even when you're upset? When you run out of patience? When you're late? When you're sad? When you feel insecure? When you disagree? It's profound to keep that space of compassion and love in every situation. Together we create a synergy that makes old habits lose their power and intentions possible!
Namaste, Tataya (^-^) P.S. You're invited to come celebrate my birthday with me Friday, October 3 for the 10 am class. Besides being with my family, it's my favorite thing to do!

Celebrating Opportunity! My Week with Dr. Douglas Graham
A couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity of a lifetime. I joined Dr. Graham, author of the book 80/10/10, and his team of health food and fitness extraordinaire's as they put on a week of provocative brilliance. The setting for Health and Fitness Week, is Cedar Springs Renewal Center, nestled in the Mt. Vernon foothills in Washington State. This is a week that challenges, supports, and expands your possibilities in a community of others with similar motivations and passions.
Everyday I ate three 80/10/10 raw vegan meals. During the three fitness sessions per day, I worked harder and had more fun than ever. Every day there were three lectures about optimal health, optimal fitness and about bringing your life together to realize your dreams. And oh, yes, I also worked! "Dr. D" generously utilized my skills of yoga, the Feldenkrais Method®, dance and massage, and I served as his "Alignment Specialist." It was truly a gift to be there.
In a friendly way, Dr. D scoffs at my yoga as "gymnastics." Although he jokes, he does speak truth. Much of the posturing we know today has been adapted from European and Asian Gymnastics and some from the martial arts. We know there is something much larger beyond the poses and the physicality, but Dr. D has never fully credited yoga with its other aspects. I think, however, he is unknowingly a master yogi himself! He radiates wellness, health, self control, mental mastery, balanced disposition, extraordinarily pure (sattvic) diet, and a passion for living. I believe it is his marriage of and commitment to the many ingredients of healthful living that enable him to emanate the love he does. His graciousness, kind heart, and forward action are fully apparent during his health and fitness week.
During the week my body was put to many tests, but it was my thinking and attitude that ultimately benefited the most. As I unlearned "I can't," you might think I relearned "I can." That's not true. I actually relearned unthinking, by simply doing. This was a profound experience for me as my training on the mat grew off the mat and then became training for living and loving. I recommend this week to everyone. It is designed for any fitness level, and I assure you will walk away growing. In addition, I learned about proper living as I saw old friends and strengthened ties in a community that demonstrates family and love.
May I also add, I thank Tataya from the bottom of my heart for helping to arrange for my absence during this trip and to all of you who may have helped her to help me. I suppose now I will be helping you! I'll see you in class.

Health Tip: Honor Your Skin
The season for sweaters and long pants is coming soon. This also a time when the amount of sun and fresh air we receive on the skin is greatly reduced. Your skin is the largest organ of the body and the most optimal place to cleanse and detoxify the body from what it absorbs from our environment. That's why it is vital to take care of your skin with not only what you put on it, but also around it. Natural fiber clothing excels in its ability to maintain your skin's freshness and health. It is breathable and wicks away perspiration effectively. Synthetic fibers, polyester and blends up to 90%, acrylics, rayon (not from India), and other assorted fabrics severely reduce the skin's capacity to detoxify. These materials hold in perspiration so that toxins and residues build up on the skin to be reabsorbed by it.
In addition, synthetic materials are partially made of plastics which irritate and overexcite the electrons in the cells of the skin creating a static electricity build up. Overtime this leads to a sensory numbness and a deficiency in the cell's ability to function. Nothing compares to cotton, wool, and silk on the skin. Keep it simple, keep it pure, keep it clean. Help your body to stay healthy as you layer up this fall.

Book of the Month--Light on Life: The Yoga Journey to Wholeness, Inner Peace, and Ultimate Freedom
by B.K.S. Iyengar

from Iyengar's own words on inside cover:
"If this book is to lay any claim to authenticity, it must make one
point clear above all others. It is this: By persistent and sustained
practice, anyone and everyone can make the yoga journey and reach the
goal of illumination and freedom. Krishna, Buddha, and Jesus lie in the
hearts of all. They are not film stars, mere idols of adulation. They
are great inspirational figures whose example is there to be followed.
They act as our role models today. Just as they reached
Self-Realization, so may we." "Many of you may worry that you are unable to meet the challenges that lie ahead. I want to assure you that you can."
