Blessings Are Blooming at YBB!
You've been asking for it, and now we have one! -- A bike rack -- thanks to Kevin Lin. You will find it in the court beside the dental office to the east of the studio.
Practitioners have been "oohing" and "aahing" about the subtle but gorgeous logo and Om symbols on the walls in the practice room! They are thanks to the artistry of interior designer Maria Cardona who projected the symbols onto the walls and then painted them! They are exquisite, Maria! No longer do we have the rather unsightly kitchen cabinets in the lobby. Now we have a newly remodeled yogi shop thanks to interior designer Jody Schriber! We love how beautiful and efficient it is. It's beyond what we could have imagined. Thank you, Jodi! And wait until you see the T-shirts, yoga pants, bags, etc. designed by an amazing local artist, Jen Lukas. Her work is lovely, whimsical, and unique, and we're delighted to offer it to you in our yogi shop! Jen works from her Nebraska based studio. She is also currently working on writing and illustrating a book focused on inspiring young women of all ages to dream and imagine. Jen regularly produces her "The Little Girl Series" and hosts artists workshops for children and adults, learn more at her website. We also have beautiful new art by Sara Kovanda whose wonderful, provocative work has adorned our studio since we opened. Don't forget -- any of her work you see in the studio is for sale. Be sure to say hello to Sara when you see her at Red Clover! A special thank you to communications expert Jennifer Conway for taking YBB to a whole new level with her marketing skills! We love Jennifer and are so grateful to her. And thank you to Hallie for bringing Belly Dance to YBB! This is a whole new, exciting venture for YBB and for you! Our anniversary celebration on Saturday was such a success, thanks to many of you including Patty and Gary Hermann and Lu Millius who have supported us so faithfully in many ways -- this time with delectable food and drink, flowers and party "stuff"! And thank you to all who came bringing flowers, cards, and well wishes and the children who had such fun and spiced up our practice room!

Free Class to Honor Mothers
In Venezuela we say May is the month of flowers. What a beautiful
season! I am declaring May at YBB the month for the "moms." We learned
a few weeks ago that we're expecting our third child -- whoa -- number
three! Thomas and I are super excited, and of course, the news has been
very thought provoking. I've been contemplating the role of a mom: the
responsibility, the pleasures, the hard work. And as I think about it,
I believe moms are "super heroes." I think we have extraordinary powers
that we don't give ourselves credit for, and I think we don't balance
well the amount we give with the amount we nurture ourselves. Imagine
how much more you could be there for your kids, for your partner and
even for yourself if you gave yourself some nurturance? All of us moms
need to refuel, need to give back to themselves some of the love
we give out. I find yoga does exactly that. Yoga gives me back so
much, so I want to honor all the moms in Lincoln, and the best way I
found was to offer a free yoga class, a date to experience your inner
power and refuel it! (This is a free class even for those of you who
have a yoga pass.) I wish I had my mom here to celebrate and share this
day with. I wish I could offer her a place of nourishment and give her
back a little of what she has given away so abundantly.
From a
daughter's point of view -- Thank all of you moms for the unconditional
love you give, for the endless sleepless nights and feedings and
patience. From a mom's point of view -- Thank all of you moms for being an example and guide for me to follow and learn in
this new journey! Have a very blessed and joyful celebration of
honoring your mother and yourself!

P.S. Anytime during the month of May, just come in and say, "I would like to treat myself to my Mother's Day Free class!"

Jumping for Joy About Yoga Alliance Teacher Training
We are thrilled about the 200 hours Yoga Alliance Certified Teacher Training that we're offering this summer! For the first time ever Lincoln will have a full yoga training program for "teachers to be" and for serious practitioners who wish to deepen their practice. It's interesting that many people attend teacher training not because they're looking to become teachers, but because they find it an invaluable tool for their personal practice. Full of philosophy, asanas and principles of alignment, pranayama and much more, this 200 hour training will be offered by r.r. Shakti, one of the most inspiring women I've ever met! Please, if you haven't yet checked Shakti's website, take a look at all the community work she is offering nationally and internationally. Thomas and I will have the pleasure to co-teach with her, and we are excited to offer to Lincoln this bountiful presence of yoga that is growing all over the world! Please feel free to share this information with friends and family, and if you have any questions, we will be more than happy to help! One hundred percent of the profits from this training will benefit Shakti's non-profit organization. Shakti is also offering three scholarships and an early bird discount registration if paid by May 1st.

Cultivating the Vayus
Perhaps you've been hearing me talk of something different for the past few weeks -- the vayus as first described by ancient yogis. The concept of vayus may be new to you, but vayus are really simple and unlike a posture or a certain style of breathing. Vayus are cultivated as you practice yoga, but are not additions to yoga.To begin, we must understand something about prana. Pra means first, and na means smallest or most basic. Prana is the first or fundamental unit of energy or life force suffusing everything. Prana enters the body through the breath and sends life giving to every cell in the body. A pain in the hip demonstrates that prana is not moving as fluidly as it does when there is not pain. Ultimately prana reduces impurities in the body, maintains the health of the body, and it is the essentials of lightness and joy. What about vayus? Prana is always functioning in the body maintaining life. The particular functions carried out by prana are divided and circulated into different functions and different forms of prana called vayus. Vayu literally translates as "wind" or "that which flows," so vayus are not something to "get" or to accomplish; rather they are something we allow or feel. The vayus of prana all have very subtle yet distinct energetic qualities, including specific functions and directions of flow. There many vayus in the body (forty-nine are described in Indian physiology). Ten pertain to physical and mental activities. Five of those govern involuntary functions like blinking or burping, and the remaining five are what we are focusing on: prana, apana, samana, udana, and vyana. The prana vayu (not to be confused with cosmic prana) stimulates and regulates the rising energy of reaching out and taking in -- that is, appropriation or absorption. Its primary manifestation is inhalation, but it also regulates and facilitates swallowing, digestion, sensory input, proper temperature, sustenance of the heart, and much more. The apana vayu, stimulates and regulates elimination or giving out. Exhalation as well as the work of kidneys, colon, bladder and even genitals are associated with the apana vayu. Reproduction involves this moving force -- the new life moves "out" into the world. Interestingly exhalation is an important focus of breath during labor. Samana vayu is the one we are concentrating on in yoga classes now. When this samana vayu is working well, we have efficient digestion, no gastric disorders, or retaining of toxins. This vayu gives the mind the power to separate out or discern good from bad -- to make choices. When it's working poorly, we have poor judgement and discrimination. I'll be covering the last two primary vayus in class later. Along with each vayu, there is an area of the body which it governs. The prana vayu, is located in the chest and lungs and correlates to the heart and heart chakra. The apana vayu is situated in the grounding of legs so the pelvis and eliminative organs are its seat along with the root chakra. Lastly, the samana vayu is found in the solar plexus, the space from navel to lower ribs. It corresponds not only to navel chakra but also the center lock or uddiyana bandha. I hope this creates a little more clarity for you in your practice. Perhaps we can begin to see more of the relationships within ourselves and the world around us. The practice of yoga, by working with the body, breath, and mind empowers us on all levels by increasing the prana in the form of these vayus. See you in class.

Recipe of the Month -- Almond Milk
We've featured this recipe before, but had so many requests for it at the anniversary celebration, we decided to repeat it.
Almond Milk 1C almonds 1/2 C sunflower 1/4 C sesame
Soak all nuts/ seeds for 8 hours and then rinse clean. Put nut mix in blender with 1 qt of water and blend. Pour blended mixture into a bowl lined with 3 layers of cheese cloth or better yet, flour sack material or T-shirt material. Hold corners of cloth to make a bag and squeeze out the milk. Repeat one or two more times. At end, honey and vanilla can be blended in for flavor. Stays alive in fridge for 3 days and keeps for almost a week. The best proteins, fats, and carbs, for your body -- nearly immediately absorbed without digesting.
